South African election results renew debate over identity-based voting

Early results from South Africa’s November 4 local elections have prompted renewed arguments that voters should judge parties primarily on competence and service delivery.

In a Mail & Guardian commentary, William Gumede argued that voting based on race or ethnicity can reduce accountability by allowing parties to rely on identity even when officials fail to provide services or address corruption.

The article said movement between parties in the 2026 results may indicate that some voters are becoming more willing to assess performance. It linked greater electoral competition to pressure for better municipal services, job creation and safer communities.

The position is an opinion about voter behaviour and democratic incentives, not a finding that race and ethnicity no longer influence South African politics. Historical inequality, party organisation and local conditions remain relevant to electoral choices.
